Federal Job Application Lessons

Not sure federal jobs are the right fit?
Compare federal, military, state, city, school, and contractor jobs in Government Careers & Training, including what OPM does and doesn't do.
Who does what?
OPM
U.S. Office of Personnel Management
The federal government's human resources and personnel policy agency. OPM sets many hiring rules and qualification standards. Most jobs are not applied for directly through OPM.

USAJOBS
usajobs.gov
The official website where federal agencies post job announcements and where you search and start applications.
Login.gov
login.gov
A secure sign-in service used by many government websites, including USAJOBS. It protects your account with two-step verification.
Hiring agency
The department or office that posted the job
Reviews your application, decides whether you meet qualifications, conducts interviews, and makes hiring decisions.
Eligible to apply vs. qualified for the job
Eligibility is about who may apply. Each announcement says who it is "open to" — for example, U.S. citizens, current federal employees, or veterans.
Qualification is about whether your experience and education meet the requirements for that specific job.
Being a U.S. citizen makes many announcements open to you, but it does not guarantee eligibility for every position, a security clearance, an interview, or a job offer.
