What this means
Every federal job announcement lists who may apply, called "This job is open to" or a hiring path. Some jobs are open to the public (all U.S. citizens). Others are limited to groups such as current federal employees, veterans, students, or people with disabilities.
Why it matters
Applying only to jobs that are open to you saves time. Eligibility to apply is different from being qualified for the job's duties.
What to prepare
- Your proof of U.S. citizenship available (you will not upload it here — some agencies request it later).
- A list of any special hiring paths that may genuinely apply to you, such as veteran status.
Steps to take
Step 1 of 3: Open USAJOBS and look at the "This job is open to" section on any announcement.
Step 2 of 3: Note which hiring paths you actually belong to. Most new citizens will start with jobs open to the public / U.S. citizens.
Step 3 of 3: Read the qualifications section separately — that is where you learn if you are qualified.
Common mistakes
- Assuming citizenship guarantees a job, interview, or security clearance.
- Selecting a special hiring path (like veterans' preference) you don't qualify for.
